Suma Capital launches its first Impact Committee

Suma Capital has taken a significant step in its commitment to sustainability and impact investing by launching the SC Infra III Fund Impact Committee (IC). This committee, launched in 2023, has as its main objective to promote sustainability and maximize the environmental and social impact of the investments made by Suma Capital. Among its focus areas are climate change mitigation and the transition to a circular economy.

The Impact Committee plays a crucial role in providing an external and independent assessment of the key impact indicators (KIIs) and impact targets (KITs) to be achieved by the fund’s investments. This ensures that commercial and impact interests are equally aligned, linking a portion of the carried interest to the performance of the KIIs and the achievement of the approved KITs.

To ensure thorough impact assessment and monitoring, the committee meets up to three months after closing a new investment to review and approve between one to three impact targets proposed by the investment team for each project. In addition, the degree of compliance with these targets is reviewed annually and at the time of exit from the investment, with an annual communication to investors.

As for the compensation mechanism, if the expected performance is not achieved, Suma Capital commits to distribute the amounts generated from the carried interest to an NGO also approved by the committee, thus ensuring that the target impact materializes by a third party.

The committee is composed of prominent professionals with extensive experience in their respective fields. Mariluz Castilla, Chair of the Committee, is a recognized consultant in sustainability and climate change, a former PwC partner in this field and founder and Secretary of the Spanish Green Growth Group. Lisa Hehenberger, Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Social Impact at ESADE, is an expert in impact investing who advises various international public and private organizations. Amedeo C. Vaccani, technical advisor in resource management, is a partner at Amane Advisors and founder of A.Vaccani & Partners, with extensive experience in resource recovery, waste management and energy projects.

Mariluz Castilla, Chair of the committee: “We are very excited about the creation of this committee, as it represents a fundamental step in ensuring that our investments are not only profitable, but also generate a positive and sustainable impact on society and the environment”.

Lisa Hehenberger, committee member: “Impact investing is crucial in today’s context, and this committee will enable us to ensure that our investment decisions are aligned with sustainability objectives and generate the maximum possible returns for society”.

This committee has as its main objective to promote sustainability and maximize the environmental and social impact of the investments made by Suma Capital.
