Biovic and Biomethane Initiatives announce a strategic alliance to boost the development of biomethane projects

Biovic, a Spanish company specialized in biogas engineering and agribusiness consulting, is strengthening its operational capacity through a strategic alliance with Biomethane Initiatives, a joint platform by Suma Capital and Sitra — as a strategic partner.

Thanks to this partnership, Biovic will gain the resources needed to advance the development and execution of its project portfolio, consolidating its position in the biomethane ecosystem in Spain. It will also accelerate the rollout of renewable gas production infrastructure and reinforce its team of 20 highly specialized professionals, who will continue working toward the shared goal of promoting the energy transition.

Biovic will continue operating under its current name and structure, while Suma Capital will become the majority shareholder, providing financial and strategic support. Luis Puchades and his management team will remain at the helm, ensuring continuity and confidence in the existing development model.

Development and optimization in the biomethane sector

Biomethane has become a strategic resource within the energy transition. According to The Spanish Gas Association, Sedigas, Spain has the technical capacity to produce up to 163 TWh of biomethane annually, which would represent approximately 45% of the country’s natural gas consumption.

In this context, the agreement will optimize the development and operational capabilities of the projects, actively contributing to energy production. This milestone aligns with Suma Capital’s energy transition strategy alongside SITRA, a key player in the field of sustainable infrastructure management.

The alliance between these companies in the biomethane ecosystem not only strengthens production but also significantly contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, it supports SDG 7 (Affordable and clean energy) by promoting biomethane as a renewable source, SDG 12 (Responsible consumption and production) through waste recovery, and SDG 13 (Climate action) by reducing emissions and dependency on fossil fuels.

The new structure will allow the continued development of ongoing projects, ensuring their viability and efficient execution. Among the key projects of Biomethane Initiatives is Biometano Montes de Toledo, a 43 GWh plant in Noez, whose construction has been completed and is currently in the testing phase. Additionally, work is underway on 15 other developments.

Sergio Fernández, Partner at Suma Capital, stated:
“Biomethane Initiatives and Biovic share the same commitment to the energy transition. We believe biomethane is one of the most efficient and scalable solutions to move forward in decarbonizing the energy system. With the knowledge and experience of Biovic and Biomethane Initiatives, we can strengthen the biomethane ecosystem in Spain”.

Luis Puchades, Partner and Founder of Biovic, added:
“This alliance will enhance project execution and foster the development of the biomethane market in Spain. Our goal is to generate a positive environmental impact and contribute to the circular economy”.

This step will provide Biovic with the resources needed to drive the development and execution of its project portfolio in the biomethane sector, optimizing the use of its assets. Biovic will maintain its identity and operational structure, focusing its growth on the efficient execution of its ongoing projects.
